This evening, the mostly cloudy sky held dozens of shades of several colors. Soft-edged patches of blue, masses of grey and mauve clouds, some of them still sporting topknots of white, and streaks of orange and rose both along the western horizon and across the higher reaches of the sky.

But I found myself imagining what the sky must look like in Los Angeles, now, with the Santa Ana winds blowing. I remember evenings of astonishing clarity this time of year, with the lights of the city beginning to glitter across the miles of hills and valleys under a darkening blue sky swept clean by the wind.

Here, I need a jacket to enjoy the evening without shivering. There, the air would now be warmer than it was at mid-day here. I miss those marvelous winds, shaking the palm fronds loose and sending the dried bougainvillea blossoms rattling along the pavements. Why can't I be in two places at once?

The Santa Ana winds have been blowing hot and threatening to take the makeshift cover off our patio. It's made of those corragated plastic sheets that make lots of noise when they rattle. The entire patio cover is built without a single nail and is not attached to the building. It has stood for at least nine years now. It has impressed even me. On one side it rests on 4x4 wood poles with a 2x4 cross beam and on the other side the 1x2 by 8 ft. support pieces hang from the rafter beams up under the roof overhang by loops of metal strapping hooked onto nails driven into the 2x4's. When we moved in the manager at that time said (and I quote)"git cher husband ta built cha a patia cova".
So I built the patio cover and no one criticized it's appearance because they assumed a man built it. Always thought that was funny. The real reason it was not attached is that we always thought we would be here only for a short while and it could be taken down and all evidence of it disposed of within two hours. It's already been taken down and put back up once so the painters could overspray into the pond and kill 95% of the fish.
The one remaining fish that survived the assault of the house painters is almost a foot long & 2lbs. He has a nasty disposition and I think the paint made him crazy. He survived electrocution once. He's a feeder goldfish that became a fish.
It would be great to be able to live in several places at once. Maybe have doors you could step through and be in distant places without having to go through the task of getting there. Be in the mountians then at the ocean then the desert. Pick the flowers, run your fingers through the sand, smell the salt air then step back through the door and sleep in your own bed.
Travel agencies would spring up all over the place. Actually there would be only one but with multi location ability the same office could duplicate itself in as many locations as it pleased.
Where is Phillip K. Dick when we need him?
Later,
Ellen
