My kitty has a stalker. It's a gray and white cat who has been hanging around for a couple of days. I haven't been able to find out yet if it's male or female, but I'm pretty sure it's looking for a home and thinks that being nice to Sugar is the way to go about it. It keeps making that soft "mer" cats make when they're being friendly. So far, Sugar hasn't run it off, but she does hiss and snarl whenever it gets to close to her. "Too close" is getting closer, though. This afternoon, both of them spent the afternoon on the back porch, and at the end they were both sleeping on chairs that were no more than two feet apart, waking now and then to eye one another, the stranger making a mer, Sugar usually making a hiss.

I haven't fed the strange kitty. The last thing I need now is another cat, even if it turns out to be a nice cat who gets along with Sugar. It looks as though it would be easy enough to coax. When I go out, it scampers twenty or thirty feet away, then stops and looks back at me. As long as I make no aggressive moves, it remains at that distance, just watching. As soon as I go back indoors, the cat slowly returns to be close to Sugar. Poor kitty must be desperate for friends. It's very tempting to consider feeding it and letting it stick around. I'm hoping that, learning that it isn't going to be fed here, it will find another house in the area. In the meantime, it can use Sugar's outdoor water bowl and there's plenty of wild food for a stray kitty to catch around here.

It was overcast most of the day, with the gray sky differentiating itself into discernible clouds for only an hour or two late in the afternoon. Though it has been slightly cooler today, the air is still muggy. I didn't turn the air conditioning on today, but I might for an hour or two this evening,or the house will keep getting hotter for hours. The attic fan hasn't worked for years now.

I have to be at the doctor's office at 9:30 tomorrow morning for x-rays. Either my neck is still out of joint, or broken, or I have mastoiditis, or a brain tumor, or an ear infection, or some kind of space worm living in my carotid artery, or I'm evolving into another species, or I'm about to die, or some combination of any or all of the above. Whatever it is, the fact that it has led to a situation in which I have to be up in the morning is not the least evil thing about it. Totally bummed.

my old, fat, orange cat is named fluffy. he lounges around, loves attention, and flops in the middle of the floor--just out of reach, but near us people. he enjoys company.

he rarely ever hissed in the ten years we've had him. he got so old that he stopped catching bugs about eight years ago.

and today while my dad and sister and i were out for a walk, a little tiny cat ran over to us, meowing. he followed us almost all the way home, running through our legs, stopping, looking around at all the houses for his people. then he just stopped following when a lady walked past us.

Fluffy "almost got replaced." I wasn't amused.
