I spent a very long time watching the light fade this evening. There was a particularly autumnal shade of violet in a cloud bank to the south for a while. The trees all became silhouettes as the last birds-- mostly acorn woodpeckers-- flitted among them, bickering over who got to perch on what branch. Distantly I heard the shouts of kids getting in a last few minutes of play. Some field, fallen dark, is now silent except for the chirping insects. I haven't seen the full moon rising, the trees being too thick in that direction. I'll see it later. Perhaps its bright roundness will take the melancholy from my mood.
