Clouds rent by wind spilled sunlight for several minutes this afternoon, making the few remaining walnut leaves glitter as they trembled in the sudden breeze which had replaced the gray rain. Woodpeckers emerged from sheltered spots and chattered at a scampering squirrel. An improbably vast cloud bank in the east gleamed white against blue sky for a while and then both were swallowed by dark clouds advancing from the west. It was brilliant while it lasted. By evening we had returned to the delightfully dreary grayness that typically marks the declining year here. A narrow streak of deep red along the western horizon then indicated the departure of the vanquished sun, and starless night fell. I'm as happy as a clam locked up in its shell. A clam with a cup of hot tea!

I've lost my bearings...

I got lost in the woods today and could hear horses knackering in the distance. I noticed that the brown/black/white pattern of my foxhiound was almost perfect camouflage this time of year, in New England at least. I noticed that I was lost when I saw my shadow preceding me. I was supposed to be walking towards the sun at that time of the afternoon. Eventually we, the dog and I, cracklecrunched our way through the leaves and underbrush and came upon a bright red pile of rotting apples. It was then, seeing the bright red of the apples, feeling the dog tugging on her lead, hard on a scent, that I thought of you. I thought of you and wished you were there in my stead. You could have given the moment much more justice in words than I ever could. And it was then that I re-appreciated how much I love the sea. Your bearings are much clearer out at sea.

Yesterday my father looked up at the sky and said:

Look at that glorious sunset, have you ever seen a sky like that?

I had seen skys much more beautiful, but usually in countries much more polluted than the average american imagine. I didn't say anything at first, until I looked up and saw the variegated sky.

I said to my pop: That's a Mackerel sky, dad. We're going to have really bad weather within two days.

Pop said: O.K. When you take this exit you are going to want to keep to your left. O.K.?

I don't think he was paying any attention to what I was saying. But that's why I'm moving to Holland.

Dig?
