Clouds rent by wind spilled sunlight for several minutes this afternoon, making the few remaining walnut leaves glitter as they trembled in the sudden breeze which had replaced the gray rain. Woodpeckers emerged from sheltered spots and chattered at a scampering squirrel. An improbably vast cloud bank in the east gleamed white against blue sky for a while and then both were swallowed by dark clouds advancing from the west. It was brilliant while it lasted. By evening we had returned to the delightfully dreary grayness that typically marks the declining year here. A narrow streak of deep red along the western horizon then indicated the departure of the vanquished sun, and starless night fell. I'm as happy as a clam locked up in its shell. A clam with a cup of hot tea!
