Reset Fifty, Day Twenty-Two
Aug. 2nd, 2024 04:34 amThursday the water was off again. It wasn't the water pipes this time, but the drains. Sewage was backing up into one of the apartments. This started Wednesday, but they got around to working on it Thursday, and most of the day the water was off. It's a good thing my nephew never fetched his water bottles, because I had to use water from one of them to flush my toilet. It it backed up into another apartment, sorry, but when you gotta go....
Of course I ended up sleeping through most of the commotion, and when I woke up near sunset the water was finally back on. I made some dinner and soon napped again, and since about three this morning I've had the fa non and the windows open cooling the place off just a bit. Sadly, the smell of smoke is now pervasive. It could linger for the rest of the summer and into the fall. I recently saw a headline (but didn't read the story) citing a dementia expert saying that wildfire smoke appears to have greater negative impact on brain function than other form of air pollution. Well great. The explains why people around here are stupider than elsewhere, and why I've gotten so stupid so fast. I live in stupid old guy town
A bit of irony: Smoke index for the mini-metropolis is currently 165, and in Paradise it is only 45. It usually gets cooler overnight up there too. I hope the raccoons and coyotes are enjoying it.
Drywall job still uncertain. State of drains fixed for now but still uncertain over the longer run. State of rescanning Safeway receipt for refund of missed coupons, still uncertain. I wish I could still do shit for myself. Who said hell is other people? I can say depending on other people is certainly hell.
Projected high today only 100, two full degrees lower than yesterday. It gets hotter the rest of the week and early next week though. I'm guessing it will remain smoky though, whatever the temperatures do. I'm expecting it will be hard to breathe. I could probably cool the place for another two hours this morning, but I think I'm going to shut the windows and turn off the fan and try to sleep instead. I've had enough of the full-strength stench.
