For those who don't watch lj_dev, Brad is preparing some significant changes to the whole "friends" concept. You might want to get your two or more cents in. Also, some of the comments are fraught with potential for delightful LJ drama, (stalkers! spies!) and at least one of them (mine, of course) actually contains a few amusing lines. Your time won't be utterly wasted.

i was confused by brad's post (too technical for me), but your point about our being published when we post openly is entirely my viewpoint. a lot of people seem to think their journals are private. it's an illusion that feels good, but it's just not true.

yeah, brad has some communication issues, and I think that's where a lot of drama gets started. I think FB here sums it up pretty well, all told.

I read Brad's post through three or four times before I was fairly certain what he was proposing, but I'm still not positive I've gotten the details right. There does seem to be a lot of confusion among those responding to the post, too. Everyone is envisioning their own ideal set of rules. Most of them will probably end up disappointed. There's a fundamental conflict between reader's options and writer's options, and there will have to be some sort of compromise.

True, if you don't want to publish, just use word, or perhaps a little book with a key.
Can we look forward to:
Reading enabled/disabled
Commenting enabled/disabled
Groups visible/invisible
Friends/associates/memberships visible/invisible
Stalking enabled/disabled/encouraged/discouraged

Some people took the friends label entirely too literally, perhaps a more neutral word is in order, even with the same characteristics.
The friends-only feature is disappointing when searching, such journals shouldn't show up in the search!
