Night Vision
Oct. 10th, 2001 04:46 amOut to spend a few minutes enjoying the pale light of the half moon, I once again unintentionally startled some deer. I, of course, can only see them as grey shadows in the night, yet they are the ones frightened of me. The poor beasts haven't a clue that I am no threat to them. They are unaware of the fact that I am all but blind in the darkness, or that I am as startled by their sudden dashes for safety as they are by the sight of me. I am always aware of my status as intruder here in their forest. It is strange that they seem less disturbed by human presence in the daylight. Perhaps I am the only person they ever see on foot at night, or maybe it is only that the predators of deer, such as mountain lions, are nocturnal. I would like them to become accustomed to me, and not run off when we are sharing the pleasant nights. And, I would very much like to be able to see as well in the dark as they do.
