The cat mopes today. She is out of sorts, and dissatisfied with her dinner. The house has been vacuumed. Perhaps she misses the familiar dust.

It is exactly the same temperature indoors and out, but there is no hint of breeze, so the fresh outdoor air does not displace the stuffy indoor air despite the wide open windows.

Evening sunlight bathes a Japanese maple down the block, passing through its autumn red leaves. The glow is like a fire frozen in time.

The day is drenched in splendid October melancholy. Right on time.

i don't think i've ever seen a japanese maple. i have a japanese plum in my yard that bears fruit in march or so. the plums have three or four large black seeds in them.

The smaller varieties of Japanese maple are popular ornamentals around here. They seldom grow more than ten or twelve feet tall, have slender and graceful brances, and their leaves turn color very early in the fall and remain on the tree for a long time.

The tree in the third picture on this page, the Hauchiwakaede, is similar to the tree in my neighbor's yard.
